Happy Halloween! Our team at SBS loves this time of year, when kids and grown-ups alike get to indulge their creative centers, take a walk in the fresh air, and enjoy a few extra treats (along with one or two tricks). To celebrate the Scary Season, we asked two questions of the staff:
We hope you enjoy our answers! What's your favorite Halloween memory?
Daniel Prohuska, Senior Strategist: Trading candy with my sister after trick or treat while watching Ghost Adventures, aka the worst show ever created.
Bilal Dardai, Senior Writer: There was a guy in one of the neighborhoods where I grew up who had the time, patience, and chaotic energy to dress himself up as a sort of scarecrow and then sit on his porch bench holding a bowl of candy for trick-or-treaters. Although I never witnessed this happen in person, my understanding was that if you tried to take more than one piece of candy from the bowl, he would jump at you for your transgression. Come to think of it, I’m basically describing the Pale Man from Pan's Labyrinth. What's the best Halloween costume you've ever seen (yours or someone else's)? Sarah: The best costume I’ve seen was in the Halloween parade in the Chicago “Boystown” neighborhood, where I saw a whole group of people dressed as the TSA – they had agents, dogs, a rolling metal detector, and a bunch of people dressed as people in line at security. Brent: Best costume I've ever seen? A photo went around a few years ago of a kid's homemade possum costume, and it was hilarious/fantastic: Daniel: A couple of years ago my wife dressed as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the photo where he's wearing a fanny pack and a black turtleneck. Rachel: In college, my friend Mike dressed up as "Marie Aquanette" and paraded around campus in FULL French queen drag (hoop skirts, powdered face, giant wig, and all), armed with several bedazzled cans of aerosol hairspray. This would probably not raise an eye these days, but in early-1990s small-town Ohio, it was quite a sensation. Sarina: The best Halloween costume I've ever seen was my friend's dog in a realistic spider costume that scared a lot of people (myself included). Bilal: I don’t know if it’s the objectively “best” costume I’ve ever seen, but when my son was six his mother asked him what he wanted to go as for Halloween, and his response was:
“Something I really like.” “Like what?” his mother asked. “An orange Starburst.” Several hours of heroic Mom effort later… Comments are closed.
